Email custom domain (TenaBill)

A verified custom domain changes the from-address domain used when TenaBill sends customer emails (portal magic links, invoice reminders, and other notifications) through your SendGrid subaccount.

Example: with local part noreply and verified domain billing.yourcompany.com, emails send as noreply@billing.yourcompany.com instead of the default {merchant}.mail.tenabill.com subdomain.

Console: TenaBill merchant console → SettingsBrandingCustom domain section (/settings/branding)

What this setting does not change

This field configures email sender domain verification only. It does not set or change the URL where customers open the billing portal. Portal links inside emails still use TenaBill-hosted checkout and portal routes.

Check the Preview address in the Email sender section above — that address updates after verification succeeds.

When to use a custom domain

Use a custom domain when you want customer emails to come from your own subdomain and match your brand. Leave the field blank to keep the default {merchant}.mail.tenabill.com subdomain provisioned at signup.

After verification, the Powered by TenaBill footer may be hidden on the customer portal (depending on your plan).

Setup steps

  1. Enter your subdomain in Custom domain and click Save custom domain.
  2. Copy the DNS TXT name and DNS TXT value shown in the console.
  3. Add the TXT record at your DNS provider (exact host and value from the console).
  4. Wait for DNS propagation — typically 5–60 minutes, sometimes up to 24 hours.
  5. Click Verify DNS. The status badge changes to Verified when the record is detected.
  6. Confirm the Preview address in Email sender shows your domain.
  7. After TXT verification, SendGrid may require additional CNAME records for DKIM. Check your SendGrid subaccount if emails fail SPF/DKIM checks.

DNS tips

  • Use a subdomain (e.g. billing.example.com), not the apex/root domain (example.com). Apex domains often conflict with existing website or mail records.
  • TXT verification proves domain ownership before TenaBill enables sending from your domain.
  • To revert to the shared domain, clear Custom domain, save, and the default subdomain is used again.
